Cosplay Spotlight

We’re spotlighting talent in the cosplay community!
Every month, The Variant showcases cosplayers who display talent, creativity, and a positive voice within the cosplay community.

“So, like the headline says, I’m ToBaldlyGo Cosplay… because frankly I’m bald, and I cosplay. I’ve been in costumes every chance I’ve had for as long as I can remember, but I just started cosplaying regularly a few years ago. I’m an extreme extrovert and I love the atmosphere and energy that comes with being around people seeing and being seen as their (and some of my) favorite characters!

In 2016 I was diagnosed with Alopecia Universalis, an immune system disorder that has gotten a bit more recognition in recent years thanks to advocates like actors Anthony Carrigan and Joseph Gatt, and athletes like Kevin Bull. While I occasionally wear wigs for cosplay, dressing as well-loved (or well-feared) bald characters helped me become more comfortable with the disorder. Through cosplay, I have had the opportunity to talk to tons of people about Alopecia Areata and how it affects people worldwide. The support and response from many in the cosplay community has been incredible and humbling.

My inspiration for ToBaldlyGo has always been my kids and my alopecia. I want them to see that their dad was able to bring something empowering and positive out of a negative circumstance. Thank you for taking the time to hear my story, and to The Variant for giving me this opportunity!”

When we heard TBGC’s story we jumped at the chance to share it. It’s positivity like his that inspires people to overcome adversity and cosplay! This month we are proud to give you two more sets from the Marvel Universe; Professor X and the Kingpin. They were shot on-location at UNC-Chapel Hill campus and The Carolina Theater in Durham, NC by Tomisina Lynn Portrait Photography respectively
You can check those out in the gallery below!!
